What effects can I create with lime paint?
Lime paint offers you the possibility to create different textures and finishes. Depending on the technique you choose, lime paint provides unique color variations and an authentic look. The paint is suitable for both walls and furniture, and each technique gives your interior a unique character.
- Cloudy effect: Creates soft transitions and subtle colour variations that provide depth and a lively appearance. Ideal for both modern and rural interiors.
- Concrete look: With one coat of lime paint and a special trowel technique, you create a tough, industrial concrete look with a refined finish.
- Striped effect: Adds subtle lines and extra texture to the wall for a modern and elegant appearance.
- Trowel technique: Creates a distinct pattern where the natural grain of the lime paint remains beautifully visible. Perfect for those looking for a handcrafted and characterful finish.
How to apply lime paint with a trowel and brush
Here are some commonly used techniques for applying lime paint, with explanations of the trowel and brush techniques. In the video below, Jennifer and Nils show you step-by-step how to use lime paint to create a beautiful cloudy effect on a large wall in our Paintfactory Ghent.
Watch the video below from Jennifer and Nils for a detailed explanation.
- Cloudy technique:
- Preparation: Start with the correct primer, such as Primer Muur, and if possible, have it tinted to your desired colour. This ensures a seamless transition between layers.
- Technique: Apply the first coat of diluted lime paint in circular, overlapping movements (also known as "grape clusters"). For large walls, it's important to work with two people and alternate. This prevents each painter from imposing their own style too much on the paint, which leads to an inconsistent result. By alternating painting, you can harmonize the movements and nuances on the wall and ensure a uniform effect.
- Concrete look:
- Preparation: Ensure a fully covering primer coat (usually 2 layers) to provide a solid base.
- Technique: Use a trowel to apply lime paint in a single coat. During the drying process, lightly moisten the paint and go over it again with a trowel to achieve the desired polished and concrete-like effect. This gives your wall a robust, matte finish with a subtle sheen.
- Trowel technique (combination with brushing):
- First coat: Apply the first coat of diluted lime paint (10%) with a brush.
- Second coat: Paint the second coat diluted (30%) and immediately begin troweling. Use a damp trowel to remove excess lime and emphasize the pattern of the first coat. The longer you trowel, the more sheen and texture you create. This gives a lively effect with a handcrafted appearance.
