Step-by-step plan for a successful paint job

Painting planned, but having trouble visualizing the beginning and end of your paint project? Don't worry, with this handy step-by-step plan, we'll help you on your way to success. And if you still have questions, we are always ready to advise you, both in our stores and online.

Preparation and supplies

Covering materials: protect your furniture, floor, windows, and walls by covering them. Don't forget to think of yourself too!

Surface preparation

Sanding: Sanding is essential to remove old paint layers, ensure good paint adhesion, and achieve a smooth result. Various sanding materials are available in different grit sizes. The higher the number, the finer the grit. Please note: do not sand a freshly plastered wall; it's better to use a wall scraper for this.

Stripping: If you want to remove existing paint layers, you can use a paint stripper. Don't forget to use a scraping knife. It's important to know the difference between a putty knife and a scraping knife. If the knife can move back and forth, it's a putty knife. A scraping knife is much harder and less flexible.

Cleaning: Make sure the surface is dry, firm, and clean before you start painting. In the past, the surface was often cleaned with ammonia diluted in water. While this is still possible, we have an environmentally friendly alternative: Bono Tools Cleaner and Cleaner Spray.

Filling and skimming: Fill holes in the surface with filler and level the surface with skim coat. Don't forget to purchase a putty knife.

Caulking: Caulking is the application of a sealant to seal joints, gaps, and cracks for a seamless finish. Choose the right sealant based on your needs and use a caulking gun for even application. Smooth it out and let it fully cure before painting for a professional end result.

Getting started with paint

Auxiliary materials: If you are working with different colors and don't want to constantly clean your paint tray, you can consider disposable paint trays. These are packaged in sets of 5.

Tape: The right tape is often underestimated but essential for a crisp result.

Brushes: Brushes are available in all shapes, sizes, and colors. Tip: When using a brush for the first time, rub it over sandpaper to remove loose bristles. If you plan to reuse the brushes for a future painting project, choose brushes where the bristles are held together with a string.

Rollers: Just like brushes, there are different types of paint rollers. Use rollers with longer naps for textured surfaces, such as bricks. Rollers with shorter naps create less texture and a smoother result. Please note: with these shorter rollers, you need to pick up enough paint to avoid roller marks. Tip: To remove loose fibers when using a paint roller for the first time, wrap it with yellow tape. If you want to take a break while painting, put your paint rollers in an airtight plastic bag to prevent air exposure.

After painting

Clean your tools: Clean your painting tools with the correct cleaning agent. The instructions for this are usually on the packaging.
