Color drenching: how to create calm and atmosphere with a single color
One color on the walls, ceiling, doors, and baseboards: that is color drenching. With this painting technique, you let different surfaces visually blend into one another. Harsh contrasts disappear, and the room takes on a calm, cohesive appearance.
Color drenching may sound bold, but it does not have to be complicated at all. By consistently applying one color, you actually have to combine fewer colors. With the right shade and type of paint, you can turn the entire room into one beautiful whole.
What is color drenching?
With color drenching, you paint different elements of a room in the same color. Think of:
- Walls
- Ceilings
- Doors and door frames
- Baseboards
- Radiators
- Built-in closets
- Decorative moldings and wall panels
Instead of keeping ceilings, baseboards, and doors white, you give them the same color as the walls. As a result, the boundaries between the various surfaces become less visible.
You can use the exact same color and finish everywhere, but you can also vary the gloss level. This way, the color palette remains calm, while different surfaces still subtly differ from one another.
Why choose color drenching?
A calm and cohesive interior
Because the same color recurs on different surfaces, there is less visual interruption. The walls, ceiling, and woodwork together form a single whole. This brings calm to rooms with many doors, closets, corners, or architectural details.
More atmosphere with color
Color strongly determines how a room feels. By using a shade not just on one accent wall, but throughout the entire room, the effect becomes more powerful and more enveloping.
A warm beige tone provides softness, green brings a natural feeling, and a deep red or brown tone makes the room extra cozy.
Architectural elements become less conspicuous
Do you want a door, radiator, or built-in closet to subtly blend into the room? Then paint it the same color as the wall. This way, the element becomes part of the whole rather than a separate eye-catcher.
Do you have beautiful decorative moldings or wall panels? Then using the same color helps emphasize the shape without adding extra color contrast.

Does color drenching make a room look smaller?
A dark color on all walls and the ceiling can make a room feel more intimate, but that does not automatically mean it looks smaller. Because hard transitions disappear, the boundaries of the room become less clear. That can actually create more depth.
Do you want to maintain a light and open look? Then choose a soft shade like Risotto White, Hay Beige, Ivory White, Grain Beige, or Savanna Green.
For a warm and cozy result, you can work with deeper colors like Fig Brown, Tobacco Brown, Black Forest Green, Barolo Red, or Plum Red.
Which color do you choose for color drenching?
The right color depends on the room, the lighting, and the feeling you want to create.
Light and warm neutrals
Beige, off-white, and light brown tones are an accessible choice when you are working with color drenching for the first time. They bring calm and warmth without making the room heavy.
Think, for example, of: Risotto White, Ivory White, Sesame Beige, Baobab Beige, or Hazelnut Beige.
These colors work well in living rooms, bedrooms, entry halls, and open living spaces.
Natural green tones
Green brings the calm of the outdoors inside. Muted colors such as Savanna Green, Olive Green, or Avocado Green feel natural and combine beautifully with wood, linen, rattan, and natural stone.
Green is particularly suitable for bedrooms, home offices, and living rooms where you want to create a calm atmosphere.
Warm red and brown tones
Do you want more depth and character? Then choose a warm red or brown tone. Colors such as Sunstone Red, Sienna Red, Fig Brown, and Tobacco Brown give a room a warm and enveloping appearance.
Use these shades, for example, in a dining room, bedroom, reading nook, or cozy sitting area.
Blue for calm and character
Blue tones also lend themselves well to color drenching. Lagoon Blue, Zinc Blue, or Scandinavian Blue give the room a calm, clear identity. Combine them with wood and warm fabrics to soften the overall effect.
The same color in different finishes
Color drenching does not mean you have to use the same paint for every surface. Walls, ceilings, and woodwork each require a suitable type of paint.
For walls and ceilings, you can work with Wall Matt. The extra matte finish ensures a calm and even result.
You paint doors, baseboards, frames, and closets with a suitable lacquer, such as Lacquer Hydro Satin. By choosing the same color, all elements remain beautifully connected. The subtle satin gloss makes the woodwork easier to maintain while simultaneously providing a slight difference in texture.
In a kitchen or bathroom, use Wall Bathroom & Kitchen on the walls. This way, you maintain the color drenching effect with a paint that is suitable for these rooms.
Combining color drenching with textured paint
You can also apply the technique by using one color in different textures. For example, paint the regular walls with matte wall paint and finish one wall with Bruut, Wall Deco Lime Paint, or Structure Paint Terra in the same color.
The color keeps the interior cohesive, while the different structures add more depth and character. Especially with neutral shades, this is a simple way to avoid the whole room feeling flat.

In which rooms does color drenching work?
In the bedroom
By painting the walls and the ceiling in the same color, the bedroom gets a cozy appearance. You can optionally extend the color to a built-in closet or door for extra calm.
In the living room
In the living room, color drenching can connect loose elements. A fireplace wall, doors, baseboards, and custom cabinets blend into the whole, allowing furniture and personal details to receive more attention.
In a small entry hall
An entry hall often contains multiple doors and little free wall space. By painting everything in one color, the room looks less busy and a clear atmosphere is created.
In the kitchen
Let the wall color recur on a door, closet, or wall panel. Choose paint types that are tailored to each surface, but have them tinted in the same shade.
In the home office
Green, blue, and warm neutrals can give a home office more calm and concentration. By also painting closets or shelves, work materials visually stay more in the background.
Color drenching step by step
1. Observe the light
A color changes throughout the day. Therefore, view a color swatch in natural light, artificial light, and in different places in the room.
2. Determine which elements you will include
Do you only want to paint the walls and the ceiling? Or will you also include doors, baseboards, radiators, and closets? The more surfaces that get the same color, the stronger the color-drenching effect becomes.
3. Choose the right paint for each surface
Use wall paint for walls and ceilings and a suitable lacquer for woodwork or metal. This way, you get a durable and well-groomed result on every surface.
4. Prepare each surface properly
Clean, sand, and repair the surfaces where necessary. Then apply the right primer. Good preparation remains important, even when everything is being painted the same color.
5. Work in a logical order
Preferably start with the ceiling and then paint the walls. Afterward, finish the doors, frames, baseboards, and other details. This way, you prevent getting dirt on surfaces you have just painted.
Want to try it cautiously first?
You don't have to immediately immerse the entire living room in a deep color. Start in a smaller space, such as a restroom, entry hall, bedroom, or home office.
You can also start with the walls and the ceiling. Does the result please you? Then you can always extend the color to the doors, baseboards, or closets later.
