Painting Plastic
Plastic is all around us. From garden furniture and flower pots to toys and window frames, this versatile material is a permanent part of our daily lives. We often want to give these plastic objects a new look or protect them from weathering and wear. This is where painting plastic comes in handy. With the right approach and products, you can transform plastic objects and extend their lifespan.
However, painting plastic can be a challenge. Ordinary paint often adheres poorly to the smooth, non-porous surfaces of plastic, which can lead to peeling and an unprofessional result. Fortunately, special paint products and techniques are available that ensure durable adhesion and a beautiful finish. At Paintfactory.be, we are happy to help you with the best solutions for painting plastic.
What is painting plastic?
Painting plastic means applying a layer of paint to a synthetic surface to beautify or protect it. Unlike wood or metal, plastic has specific properties that require a different approach.
Plastic is naturally often smooth and has low surface tension, making it difficult for standard paints to adhere. Therefore, you need special paint for plastic and often an adhesion primer.
The type of plastic is also important. Common types such as PVC (polyvinyl chloride), ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene), and PP (polypropylene) each have their own characteristics. Some are more flexible, others harder, and paint adhesion can vary by type. Good preparation and the use of the right plastic paint are crucial for a durable and beautiful result.

Advantages & applications of plastic paint
Painting plastic offers numerous advantages and opens up a world of creative possibilities. You can breathe new life into old, weathered plastic items or adapt their color to your interior or exterior.
The main advantages are:
Beautification: give plastic furniture, flower boxes, or decorative objects a fresh, modern look. Match colors to your style.
Protection: paint protects plastic from UV radiation, weathering, and wear, preventing the material from aging or becoming brittle prematurely. This is especially important for outdoor objects.
Durability: by painting, you extend the lifespan of your plastic items, contributing to a more sustainable lifestyle.
The applications of plastic paint are:
Indoors: think of painting plastic chairs, tables, flower pots, toys, storage bins, PVC pipes, and even switches or light fixtures. In the bathroom or kitchen, this provides a water-repellent and easy-to-clean finish.
Outdoors: ideal for garden furniture, plastic window frames, doors, gutters, downspouts, fences, and playground equipment. With the right paint, these elements remain resistant to all weather conditions and look good for years.
Which paint do you choose when?
The choice of the right paint is essential for a successful result when painting plastic. It always starts with a good primer.
The role of primer:
An adhesion primer is indispensable when painting plastic. It ensures that the final coat of paint can adhere well to the smooth surface of the plastic. Without primer, the paint will quickly peel or show scratches. A primer for smooth surfaces creates an adhesive layer to which the topcoat can optimally adhere. Consider our OMNI HYDRO.
Types of paints for plastic:
LACQUER HYDRO (water-based lacquer): This paint for plastic is ideal for indoor use and objects not exposed to extreme conditions. Water-based paints are low-odor, quick-drying, more environmentally friendly, and easy to clean. They are available in various gloss levels, such as satin and high gloss. Their flexibility makes them suitable for various types of plastic.
Satin (silk gloss): Offers a subtle, soft sheen that reflects less than high gloss. This is a popular choice for a more classic or understated look, and it hides small imperfections better.
When making your choice, also consider functionality. For plastic in the bathroom or kitchen, a washable and moisture-resistant paint is preferable. For outdoor projects, a paint with good UV resistance and flexibility against temperature differences is recommended.

Step-by-step plan for painting plastic
Follow this simple step-by-step plan for a successful result when painting plastic:
Clean: Start by thoroughly cleaning the plastic surface. Use a degreaser to remove all dirt, grease, and silicone residues. Rinse well with water and let it dry completely.
Sand: Lightly sand the plastic surface with fine sandpaper (grit P220-P320). This creates microscopic scratches where the primer can adhere better. Then, remove dust from the surface with a cloth and a degreaser.
Apply primer: Apply a thin, even layer of adhesion primer suitable for smooth surfaces. This step is crucial for good adhesion of the plastic paint. Let the primer dry completely according to the instructions on the packaging.
Optional light sanding: For an extra smooth result, you can very lightly sand the dried primer layer with very fine sandpaper (P320 or finer) and re-dust.
Topcoat: Apply one or two thin layers of the chosen paint. Ensure sufficient drying time between coats. Two thin coats often give a more beautiful and durable result than one thick coat.
Cure: Allow the paint to cure sufficiently before using the object intensively. The drying time is indicated on the packaging.
