Painting PVC: A Professional Approach

PVC is known to be difficult to paint, but with the right approach, it's easy and durable. At Paintfactory, we offer the best products and advice to make your PVC project a success. Whether it's new or previously painted surfaces, these steps will help you achieve a professional result.

Is the PVC painted or not?

Before you start, it's important to determine whether the PVC has been painted before and its current condition. This influences the preparatory steps and the choice of products.

A. Painted PVC

Check the current paint layer:

  1. Intact paint layer
For good adhesion, sand the paint with sandpaper (grit 150-180), remove dust, and degrease with Bonotools Cleaner Spray. Rinse the surface thoroughly and let it dry. Then apply two coats of LAK HYDRO SATIN with a brush or felt roller. Lightly sand between coats and remove masking tape after applying the paint.

  2. Peeling paint layer
Completely remove loose paint by sanding. Do not use paint removers, as these can damage the PVC. Clean with Bonotools Cleaner Spray and rinse thoroughly. Apply a coat of OMNI HYDRO as a primer, followed by two coats of your chosen finish paint (LAK HYDRO SATIN).

  3. Chalking paint layer
Sand the surface and remove all powdery residue. If adhesion is poor, completely remove the layers by sanding. Clean the surface with Bonotools Cleaner Spray and apply one coat of OMNI HYDRO, followed by two coats of finish paint.

B. Unpainted PVC

If the PVC has not yet been painted, start with a thorough cleaning and sanding of the surface. Use Bonotools Cleaner Spray to remove dirt and dust. Rinse and let the surface dry completely. Then apply one coat of OMNI HYDRO as a primer, followed by two finish coats of LAK HYDRO in the desired finish.

Important painting conditions

Pay attention to the following painting conditions to achieve optimal results:

  • Temperature: Paint between 5°C and 30°C, preferably above 10°C.
  • Humidity: Maximum 80% relative humidity. Be careful of morning and evening dew, as this can slow down the drying process.
  • No rain: Do not paint when rain is expected, as this can affect the adhesion of the paint.

Masking and painting

Always use suitable masking tape to neatly tape off edges. Apply the paint with a brush or an Anza felt roller and observe the drying times between coats. Lightly sand between coats for a perfectly smooth result.
