How to paint doors with water-based paint: a simple guide
Painting doors with water-based paint is a smart choice for both experienced painters and DIY enthusiasts. Although some hesitate due to the fast drying time of these paints, they offer numerous advantages: less odor, no discoloration, and easy to clean. In this guide, we explain how to achieve a perfect result with water-based paints!
Differences between water-based and synthetic paints
Water-based paints are not only more environmentally friendly, but also more user-friendly. They dry faster, do not yellow, and can be easily cleaned with water. This makes them ideal for indoor projects such as doors. However, their faster drying time requires an adapted technique. Follow our tips for the best results.

Step 1: A clean start
Good preparation is the key to success. Degrease your door thoroughly with a universal degreaser like Cleaner Spray. This is especially important for doors, as skin oils can prevent good adhesion.
Step 2: Primer for a strong base
Do you have old, damaged doors? Then sand away any loose paint residue. For new doors or smooth painter's doors, it's best to use an adhesion primer such as Omni Hydro. This provides a strong base for the finishing coat.
Step 3: Sanding for a smooth surface
After the primer coat, sand lightly with sandpaper (grit P240 or higher) to remove imperfections. Make sure the surface is completely dry before applying the finishing paint.
Step 4: Painting flat doors
For flat doors, work in one direction, for example from left to right, and make sure you don't change direction halfway. Distribute the paint evenly by making both horizontal and vertical movements. Ensure sufficient paint, as layers that are too thin dry too quickly.
Step 5: Painting doors with panels
For doors with different reliefs, start with the deeper parts. Then work towards the higher parts. This prevents the paint from drying out and leaving streaks.
Step 6: Watch out for drips
Water-based paint dries quickly, so pay close attention while painting. Correct drips immediately to maintain a smooth result. If necessary, you can lightly sand later and apply an extra coat.
Step 7: Apply a double coat of paint
For the best finish and durability, we recommend applying two coats of water-based paint. Light sanding between coats ensures a perfectly smooth finish.
